REZZ “Flying Octopus”
Animated Music Video
Co-writer, Co-director | Mau5trap Records, The Field
REZZ’s whimsically mystical song “Flying Octopus” was in need of an animated music video—and fast! Due to unforeseen circumstances, The Field was left with less than three weeks (and little budget) to complete a music video for the launch of Rezz’s new single with Mau5trap Records. I was hired to write a concept for the video, bring an animation team onboard, and co-direct the piece. My mandate was to meet the deadline without going over-budget, but to also ensure that the final product resonated with Rezz’s considerable fan-base.
Writing & Research
I worked on a concept that fit the artist’s initial concept of an octopus recruiting friends in order to fly. That concept was turned into a treatment that further expanded on the world and characters, creating the basis for the final story.
Calling back my experiences in music production and performance, I created a beat-sheet that ensured the story matched the song thematically, as well as musically.

Direction
Working closely with my co-director Aoífe Doyle (Pink Kong), I helped to develop the conceptual direction, action, and visual storytelling of the music video. We included much of the mythology built up by REZZ’s fanbase, including her stage performances and supporting imagery.

Project Outcomes
- Expanded the artist’s visual brand by translating REZZ’s signature hypnotic sound into a narrative-driven animated short film, deepening fan engagement and establishing a unique aesthetic identity in the EDM scene.
- Achieved viral success, garnering millions of views across platforms and becoming a fan-favourite, praised for its unexpected emotional depth and cinematic quality in contrast to typical music videos.
- Strengthened cross-media storytelling, bridging music and animation to create a memorable, character-driven experience that resonated beyond the track itself—fueling fan art, merchandise, and live show inspiration.
- Over 2.9 million views across YouTube alone, with more on other platforms.
